Next.js or WordPress?

Next.js is a React framework for building sites in code. WordPress is open-source software installed on hosting you choose and extended with plugins. The better choice depends on what your site has to do and who will run it.

What to plan for with each

With Next.js: changes beyond content need a developer. and content editing comes from the content source you choose, not a built-in builder.

With WordPress: core, theme and plugin updates need regular attention. and every plugin added is one more thing to keep current and compatible.

How we would decide

List the jobs the site must do, such as bookings, a store, listings or member logins.

Check each job against what each platform has built in, through add-ons or as custom work.

Decide who will update the site day to day, and how often.

Check what you could take with you if you move later.

Next.js or WordPress?

Next.js compared with WordPress
CriterionNext.jsWordPress
Hosting and upkeep[4][2]Deploys to a Node.js server, a Docker container, static hosting or a supported platform adapter.Runs on hosting you choose, which needs PHP, a MySQL or MariaDB database and HTTPS.
Selling online[1][5]Stores are built by connecting a commerce service to custom pages.Selling online comes from WooCommerce, which adds products, a cart and checkout.
Custom code[6][7]Everything is code, including forms handled on the server with Server Actions.Themes and custom blocks can be written in code.
Adding features[8][3]Features come from libraries and services chosen for the project, such as authentication libraries. Most features come from plugins in the WordPress.org directory.
Moving away later[4][9]Next.js documents self-hosting with a Node.js server or Docker, with full feature support. Static exports support fewer features, and support through adapters varies. Who owns the code depends on the agreement for the build. The Export screen produces an XML file of posts, pages and other content.

Choose Next.js when

  • The site needs logins, listings or integrations a builder would stretch to handle.
  • Speed and full control over every page matter more than editing in a visual builder.

Choose WordPress when

  • You want to own the software and choose your own hosting.
  • A well-supported plugin already does the job you need.
  • Several people will edit pages and posts regularly.

Do you work with both Next.js and WordPress?

Yes. Next.js is one of the platforms we build on, and we recommend it when it suits the jobs your site has to do. If another platform fits better, we say so.
