WordPress contact form emails not arriving

WordPress sends form notifications through wp_mail, and a successful send there only means the request was processed, not delivered. Send from a real address on your domain through an authenticated mail service, then test.

Why WordPress is different

WordPress form plugins generally send through wp_mail, which uses the server mail setup unless a plugin or developer connects a mail service. That is why the fix is usually in how WordPress sends, not in the form itself.

Diagnose it

Symptoms, checks and fixes

Common symptoms

  • The form plugin says the message was sent, but nothing arrives.
  • Notifications come from wordpress@yourdomain or land in spam.

Checks to run

CheckHow to tellFix
Does "sent" mean delivered?WordPress's documentation says a true return from wp_mail does not mean the person received the email.Judge delivery by real test messages, not by the plugin saying it sent.[1]
What From address is used?Open a notification and read the sender. WordPress defaults to wordpress@ your site domain, which some hosts block if it does not exist.Set the From address to a real mailbox on your domain in the form or mail settings.[1]
Is mail sent through an authenticated service?Check whether the site uses the host default mailer or a configured SMTP or email API connection.Connect a mail service set up with SPF or DKIM for your domain, which Gmail requires.[1][2]
Does a real test arrive?Submit the live form to an outside address and check inbox and spam.Repeat after plugin, host or DNS changes.[2]
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a developer change how WordPress sends mail?

Yes. WordPress provides hooks, such as phpmailer_init and the wp_mail_from filter, to configure the mailer and sender.[1]
